Advocacy and Inclusion

Advocating for your kids, family members and friends can be a mine field when it comes to getting the resources and supports they need.  Come learn about strategies and trends that could help you develop new skills.  We'll share resources for advanced advocacy and have time for questions and brainstorming on what you have experienced as an advocate.

This is a FREE workshop but we will be doing some
activities so we need a count of how many people will be attending so we have enough supplies.

Contact Denise Wetzel to pre-register by Wednesday, September 15
by calling (208) 704-3698 OR send an e-mail to: panhandleautismsociety@yahoo.com

 Gymnastics Classes for Children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders

Join at any time!
Pay only for the classes you attend!
Go to Funtastics at 6360 Sunshine Street
(behind Applebees in Coeur d'Alene)
or call 208-772-9443 to register for "Gymnastics Connect"

A teacher at Funtastics recently approached me and said she would like to offer a gymnastics class for children with autism.  She requested that children come with a therapist/parent to help assist.  The classes would start in June on Friday early afternoons.  There is a $25 yearly fee to join Funtastics and then each class would cost $8 per child.  You only pay for the classes that you attend.  If there are siblings that would like to participate, it would be $5 for the additional child.

50 minute class includes: warm-up, obstacle course, and free play time. Exercises are suitable for reducing coping mechanisms, and increasing muscle tone, muscle strength and body awareness.  Gymnastics helps children become more socially aware and better able to interact with others.

Idaho Help Website

Check out the Idaho Help website. This month there are great articles about support groups for families experiencing Autism, and information about the national Self Advocate movement as well as a compilation of "Oral Histories of Self Advocates", which gives great insight into the lives and actions of self advocates. We continue to add to the more than 12,000 resources on the website, and ask that you check them out.

"In 1990, the first national self-advocacy conference was held in Estes Park, Colorado, where formation of a national organization began. Steering committee meetings were held over the next several years. Nancy Ward and Tia Nelis were elected as the first chair and co-chair of the national organization. Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) was incorporated at the third national self-advocacy conference in 1994. Currently, approximately 800 self-advocacy chapters exist within the United States. Internationally, there are organizations in at least 43 other countries."-from the article Leaders with Developmental Disabilities in the Self Advocacy Movement.
